Stylebook Book Club - Book 16

This month’s book is DIY Wardrobe Makeovers, by Suzannah Hamlin Stanley. I’m really excited about refashioning, and this book is full of simple projects to help you transform your clothes. In case you haven't heard about it, refashioning is a way to upcycle your clothes with sewing alterations. You can see some advanced examples here.

My latest refashioning project was a pair of jeans that I turned into a skirt. The jeans had been sitting on my Least Worn page in Stylebook for months, and I knew I was going to have to either commit to wearing them more or donate them. I decided to try to give them new life as a skirt instead of donating. I found a refashioning tutorial on YouTube that was surprisingly easy and I gained a “new” item without spending any money!

That experience made me wonder what other clothes in my closet could get more wears with a few tweaks. When I saw this book, I knew it was the perfect addition to my bookshelf for the next time I decided to refashion something in my wardrobe. If you’re thinking about reducing your wardrobe size this year, why not try some of these projects on a few of the items destined to be purged? Look at your Least Worn statistic inside Stylebook and see if there are any pieces that could be altered to be something that you would wear and enjoy more. If you have fast fashion items that may not be readily accepted at consignment shops, this may be the perfect opportunity to save them from the landfill.
