Stylebook Book Club - Book 18

I was browsing the library and spotted “As If” by Jen Chaney on the featured table. I read this book in two days, and enjoyed it so much I had to interrupt our regularly scheduled programing to include it.

This book discusses the entire making of the film “Clueless”, but I particularly enjoy the chapters about the clothes, the influence the movie had on the fashion world and the real-life inspiration for Cher’s amazing closet. The interviews in “As If” made me smile, and it was educational to read Mona May’s commentary on how she dressed the actors. I think it’s a great lesson for weaving bright, joyful pieces into your own wardrobe and how clothes speak to the world around you. I also loved reading about how well everyone worked together - it sounds like it was a fun project for everyone involved. I hope you enjoy this read as much as I did, and rewatch the movie while you’re at it!

"Clueless" holds a special place in my heart not just because it’s a fashion classic, but because nearly everyone who encounters my closet app Stylebook says something like, “OMG it’s like Cher’s closet from Clueless!” That scene still feels so futuristic and exciting, and I love the comparison. PLUS, Amy Heckerling was the speaker at my college graduation so… that was awesome.
